peeps: Talli Roland
Born and raised in Canada, Talli Roland now lives in London, where she savors the great cultural life (coffee and wine). She writes fun, romantic fiction too. Despite training as a journalist, Talli soon found she preferred making up her own stories — complete with happy endings. Twice shortlisted for the UK’s Festival of Romance, Talli’s novels have also been chosen as Amazon Customer Favorites and top books of the year by industry review websites. Her books are bestsellers in both Britain and the United States.
How Talli Got Started Self-Publishing
After having two novels published by a traditional small press, Talli noticed that the majority of her sales came from Amazon — and in ebook format. So, she figured why not hire a cover designer and a professional editor and keep all the profits?
So that’s exactly what she did.
She hasn’t looked back since. “I can control my output,” she says. “I can build up my readership on my own timeline. And I can keep the revenues! I truly believe readers don’t care who or what has published a novel, as long as it’s an engaging, high-quality story.”
Self-Publishing Observations and Tips
Not surprisingly, Talli is very enthusiastic and highly optimistic about self-publishing’s progress and the publishing industry’s rapid evolution. “Things are changing fast in publishing,” Talli says. “It’s exciting for everyone, and I can’t wait to see what’s ahead! Never have authors had so much choice, and it’s wonderful to be able to focus on reaching readers directly.”
Her advice to other self-publishers is simple: “Keep writing and putting books out there. That’s what builds a readership, above and beyond promotion.”
