One of the anonymous quotes about words I’m quite fond of is: “Never make fun of someone if they mispronounce a word. It means they learned it by reading.”
This does highlight one of the problems with the written word: you’re not sure how words you’re unfamiliar with are actually pronounced, especially foreign ones.
Enter Forvo, the pronunciation dictionary.
Type in the word, select the language (if it presents options), and actually hear the word spoken by a native speaker. No account needed!
How comprehensive it is, I have no idea, but so far I’ve managed to find all the foreign words I know that come to mind to test, and yes, they’re pronounced exactly as they should be. Definitely a must bookmark.
