itadakimasu ee-ta-da-kee-ma-soo

Similar in use to “bon appetit” and said by the Japanese before meals, it goes way deeper in scope. Its literal translation is “I humbly receive,” and expresses gratitude to everyone and everything that made the meal possible at all levels—from the chef who prepared it to nature’s elements. It is thanks, appreciation and respect all encapsulated in a single word.
