Note

Not that it’s a flood, but hang around online writer’s forums, and you’ll see someone complaining about not being able to finish writing a work-in-progress, constantly distracted as they are by new book ideas they start working on immediately as they get them, understandably excited with the fresh idea as they are. These posts and comments happen often enough to notice.

There’s usually the smattering of “advice” and “tips” from others in response. But it always just boils down to this:

Having the discipline to finish what you started is all on you, dude. It’s not like you really need tips to know that what you need to do is force yourself and park your butt on the chair to type away on the current book project until you’re finished.

Ideas are cheap, and you’ll get them all the time. Probably even more so these days, overexposed to media as we all are. I don’t think you really need someone to tell you to just jot them down and return to them later after you’ve finished what you’re already working on, do you?

Or maybe you really enjoy doing things this way. In which case, knock yourself out and have fun! Just don’t expect to see your author byline on a book cover anytime soon.
