Note

Can’t say that the “rest reward” thing is my idea—just one of those things I regularly come across as I futz around online. This one just happened to stick in my psyche, and got pulled back out as a perfect fit for this sleeping Donald meme.

The message is rest is natural. And it is required. The prevailing sentiment that to get ahead, one needs to forego rest and dedicate as much time as possible instead to work, well, that’s just plain silly. Employers love it, of course, particularly those who bill out your time, but that’s at your expense. If you work under that system, will the gains be worth it? Will there even be anything to gain at all, assuming you manage not to burn yourself out (or worse)?

Note that I didn’t say not too devote too much time to work; it may not even feel like work if you truly love what you do. But realize that if the balance isn’t right, it will affect your work, whatever it is. It’s just not optimal. Make time for needed rest, and squish any guilt they may have trained you to feel for doing so. You may likely find you’ll be doing your best work as a result.
