Pick a niche and focus.

Setting aside the academic marketing-speak on reasons why you should focus and “specialize” your freelance writing business on a specific niche, there are two practical reasons for doing that. It will very likely be:

• Easier to find clients.
• Easier to make more money.

Sure, there’s a market for generalists. Content farms, for instance. But they won’t pay much. They don’t have to; there’s no shortage of beginners and off-shore labor who’ll do it, and for less. That’s who you’ll be competing against as a generalist.

The decent-paying clients, on the other hand, typically have a specialty in mind when seeking out a freelancer. If they like your work, they’re more likely to keep coming back and tell others in the industry about you, and even sometimes hire you to do other non-niche writing at your higher niche rates!
