Q: If podcasts are so useless, then why do so many people like them? They are not useless!
Apparently asdasd’s referring to my FAQ question on why I won’t link to podcasts and videos.
Dead sure I never said they were “useless.” Because they obviously aren’t. But asdasd does make an absolutely spot on observation: Podcasts and vids do attract an audience.
No argument there. Didn’t even argue that the first time, so quit projecting and go by what’s actually written (a major reason fights are so easily sparked online, by the way, but we don’t care about that now).
But that’s not even the main reason why in our field you see them in play all over the place.
And that reason would be: While you’re listening to/watching them, marketers own your brain.
In other words, the damn things are excellent at selling you stuff. Marketers love them. And for the very same factors I don’t like them as resources for the Reader, as I stated before.
What this means is that if you’re selling something, you’d be seriously doing yourself a disservice not tapping podcasts and videos as sales tools… assuming you can figure out angles to make them work (but really, it’s not that hard, so get to it).
For learning? hahahaha No different from TV. I believe I called it a bass ackwards use of available tech. But hey, if you don’t mind giving up control and being paced along (herded… into those good old funnels you keep hearing about, most likely), enjoy the ride!
Now don’t get me started on that multitasking silliness (not for knowledge workers, unless you happen to be doing something mind-numbingly mechanical, like stapling batches of dead tree pieces together). And especially don’t get me going on “webinars.”
