How Rafe Got Started Self-Publishing

B002O0BCFG What's In It For Me? by Rafe GomezRafe was a nationally syndicated radio DJ from 2003 through 2008. When that gig and career ended as a result of the economic downturn, Rafe found himself unemployed and trying all of the available find-a-job literature on the market. “None of it helped,” he says.

For a year his efforts went nowhere. But the experience gave him what he needed to come up with a new approach to finding employment based on a little-known sales strategy. It worked immediately. Rafe realized that he created a valuable methodology that  could help countless others who were also, as he puts it, “out of work, options and hope.”

He wrote a book that explained his unique approach, but getting a print version published was out of the question: It would have taken far too long to make it become a reality, the subject matter too critically of-the-moment.

So, with his radio background, Rafe was able to quickly (and inexpensively) produce a top-notch, one hour audiobook, released in the fall of 2009. Perfect timing. Since its release, What’s In It For Me? has sold over 2,000 copies across its various international distribution channels, and its success made the launch of VC Inc. Marketing possible.

Self-Publishing Observations and Tips

  • “Keep your writing focused, sharp and tight.”
  • “Get pre-publication feedback on your book from impartial friends or professional readers/editors. Accept their criticism gracefully: They may have ideas and observations that could vastly improve your work.”
  • “Edit, edit, edit. Rewrite, rewrite, rewrite. Polish, polish, polish!”
  • “Don’t get too attached to particular sections, chapters or sentences. If losing or shortening unnecessary parts can strengthen the book and make it move faster and more sensically, you must do it.”
  • “Consider purchasing a PR distribution package to help build awareness among potential buyers of your release (I’ve had huge success with PRWeb.com).”
