A niche market is a specific, and more focused portion of a larger market. The size of a niche market can vary. Many ebook authors assume that a niche market is a small market in customer size and therefore will be a lot less lucrative. This is not always true.

For example; you may write an ebook about losing weight, which is a massive market. This market is already saturated and is difficult to break into as a new author. You would be better off to write an ebook for a niche segment of this market such as “Weight Loss for Post Pregnant Women.”

This niche market has huge potential and can be very lucrative to an author. There is a big market of pregnant women wanting to lose weight after they have given birth. These readers will be more likely to identify with an ebook title that is specifically for post pregnant women than a general weight loss ebook.

Think of a niche market as a narrowly defined group of potential customers that fits into a larger market. If you are targeting a niche market then you are providing specific information for that group that is not being addressed by the mainstream ebooks.

Writing for a niche market also applies to fiction authors who want to stand out from the crowd. You may write an ebook for the “Fantasy” genre, but unless you have some niche or unique storyline, it will just blend in with the thousands of other Fantasy ebooks.

You would be amazed at some of the ebook topics that have been covered. Yet, it has been those authors who have written ebooks for niche topics that have profited very nicely. Don’t just write an ebook about dog training — write an ebook about dog training for labradors. Don’t write an ebook about golf training — write an ebook about golf training for high school players.

One of the key reasons for targeting a niche market is to establish yourself as an expert; from there you can build your reputation within the larger market. Once you become the expert, people will look for your name as the “go-to” person to help answer their questions.

Once you have established your “position” in your niche then you can start to expand into other areas within your topic if you see the potential to do so. It is only once you have established your name, brand and position that you will succeed in moving on to bigger things.

The Internet can take a writer from “unknown to famous” much more quickly than ever before when you stand out from the crowd by offering something different and unique.

Finding a niche market requires doing some research and gaining information during the planning stage of your ebook. This involves doing your homework and identifying exactly what online viewers are searching for. A free tool to use is the Google AdWords or keyword tool. You can even narrow down your search with this tool by choosing which country you want to focus on. This tool will tell how many searches have been entered for your niche topic each month.

During this planning stage for your ebook, you will also want to check out your competition. Type your keywords into a search engine and see what is already out there on the market. If you find another ebook already covering your topic, see if you can add a slight twist to your title and content to attract a new audience.

Your research will also provide you with the information to establish if your potential customers are accessible and are in a market that is growing fast enough for you to achieve your sales targets.

In the ebook writing and creation stage you will need to produce an attention grabbing title that contains the exact keywords that people are searching for. You will need to write for your target market and answer their questions, satisfy their needs or wants, and provide them with the experience they expect when buying your ebook.

eBook marketing for a niche market requires identifying where on the Internet your ideal customer visits. This may be a forum that directly targets your niche topic, a chat room, community website, trade newsletter, website or maybe you will need to directly target your market by using paid advertising.

It is essential that you carefully select the online ebook shops that you want your ebook to appear in. You will not be too successful if you just submit your ebook to the major stores such as Amazon. Your ebook will just get lost amongst the thousands of other titles. If you write an ebook about sports then try to get your product in an online store that focuses on sports ebooks. If you write something for entrepreneurs, get your ebook into the online ebook store for entrepreneurs.

Finally, you will need to build a relationship with your ideal customer by offering free advice, informational products, setting up a blog, website or social media site that reaches them directly. This is why branding and building your author platform is vital to your success as an author.

So before you decide to write and self-publish an ebook, see if you are better off targeting a niche market. It may just take you from unknown writer to successfully self-published ebook author.

If you could think of the most rewarding and amazing success story for your ebook what would it be? Would it be selling 20,000 copies? Would it be seeing your ebook on a bestseller list? How about a new career as a professional writer? Maybe it will be just hearing the personal stories from your readers about how your ebook has enriched or changed their lives?
