By Sue Kendrick
For more info on becoming a Wordpreneur contributor, click here.

The Consumerist Just Spat on Our Copyrights

Considering the kind of work we do, articles and news that revolve around copyright issues, even if they’re not directly about written creations, usually catch my eye… as long as they’re not boring heavy on the legalese. (Really, anyone with half-a-brain can decipher a legal document; the trick is trying to stay awake long enough to get it done.) So no surprise that a post titled “Copycat Company Sues Original Artist to Void Copyright Claims” would draw my attention.

Writing Reviews for Cash

No idea if the listed author, MD, really exists or not — it’s just one of a number of articles on “moneymaking ideas” that said author is circulating — and the author blurb at the end just leads to a domain that redirects to the infoproduct being affiliate-promoted (the point of DM’s articles). BUT, it’s not a bad piece… makes you go hmm. — EES

Unedited Guest Article by Mathieu Delaborde

When reading products and service reviews they sound very interesting. Many a times people get convinced to buy products because of what they read rather than what they know about the product. Hardly do they think they could be the ones writing reviews for such products. Furthermore, they do not imagine that they could actually earn dollars for their trouble. Yet that is the pleasant reality. Writing reviews pays and could even turn around one’s fortunes.

What is Pinging and Why Do You Need to Ping Your Blog?

Unedited Guest Article by Tracey A. Edwards

You have probably heard by now that you should ping your blog but what is pinging and what does it do?

Basically all pinging does is tell the search engines that you’ve just updated your blog. And since search engines (and people) like to read new and fresh content they are more likely to take a wander over to your site to see what’s new. This can mean not only more traffic and visitors to your blog, but also you’ll get listed in the search engines faster (or at least that’s the theory).

Hard Truths About Book Publishing

No, I haven’t confirmed any of these “truths,” but I don’t have any reason to disbelieve any of it either. The book sales data, I think, most of you will find really interesting (enough to bookmark!). The only part I find questionable is the insinuation that “subsidy publishing” is behind the tremendous growth in new titles published, but since a) I’m too lazy to go digging around and do research, and b) I really don’t care a whit, I’ll leave it as is.

Those sales figures and stats really do look mighty interesting, however… nice and juicy and ready to be crunched. I do have oodles of very specific questions about them and can’t really use any without digging further (Shiel does tell us where to dig!), but they do give us a pretty good picture of what’s happening out there. Good stuff. — EES

Article by Walt Shiel

Let’s consider some of the “hard truths” about the publishing industry.

If you’re at all serious about publishing, whether self-publishing or not, you really need to be aware of some basic statistics about the industry. They aren’t pretty and may tend to be discouraging. But would you rather jump into these treacherous waters with a head full of platitudes and myths… or with a clear-eyed view of how things really are?
