Automating Video Transcription
In response to my Produce Video Transcripts EGAD post, Steve Kayser tweeted, “Good idea on transcripts from video. Any software to automate that? Instead of the good old headphones?”
Well, I personally have absolutely zero experience in this area. But we can probably figure something out.

First, it’s really the audio in a video we’ll want to transcribe. Googling “extract audio from video” brings up a whole bunch of links to resources and software, many free. Gut is this part of the process won’t be a problem.
Now to get that audio transcribed. Although another Google search will likely produce results, the one piece of software I keep hearing about is Dragon NaturallySpeaking by Nuance Communications. Wouldn’t know if it’s good or bad or the best or whatever (that’s what zero experience usually means), but it is the software I hear mentioned. At least the one that managed to lodge itself into my psyche.
So, good chance that (or something similar) will produce transcribed text from the audio extracted from the video. If our video has only one speaker, great, we’re almost done. But if we’ve got two or more people talking (a conference or panel discussion, say), then we’ll have to do some editing. Still likely heaps better than the manual “good old headphones” route.
