How to Write a Book and Choose Your Publishing Style

Unedited Guest Article by Steve Manning

A lot of people don’t like the idea of self publishing or publishing on demand because they feel their book wasn’t really ‘published,’ didn’t undergo the scrutiny they suspect any manuscript would have to endure and surpass if it was purchased and produced by a ‘traditional’ publisher, and that it wouldn’t be looked upon favorably by distributors and bookstores around the world as a viable product worthy of promotion and marketing efforts.

Why Writing Copy for the Web is Different

Unedited Guest Article by Althea Marie Tan

Everyday, we are just deluged by copies of all kind. Often we are not conscious of it, but I guess in our little ways we subconsciously filter what copies work and what doesn’t. Personally, the ultimate test of whether a copy (as in advertising in print, radio, television or online) succeeds is if I ultimately decide to buy a product, try a service, or even pique my interest that I end up inquiring about something.

How to Have Blog RSS Feeds Sent to You by Email

I guess I’m just old school, but in most cases I prefer receiving blog news and updates by email rather than through an RSS newsreader.

Scratch that… it has less to do with being “old school” than it does with the fact that email is still my main direct communications channel. Simply put, I spend a lot of time daily using my email client software. First thing I look at in the morning, and more often than not, the last thing I check before signing off for the day.

Freelancers: How to Deal With Slow-Paying Clients

Slow-Paying Clients – Advice and Options for Freelancers
Unedited Guest Article by Brian Bass

It’s the freelance circle of life — you pitch the job, you get the job, you do the job, you bill the job, and you get paid for the job. Right? If only it worked that easily. You’ve probably seen those small “Share This”-type links on many blogs and sites (like right here, the green thingie all the way at the bottom) that, when clicked on, let you “tell a friend” about a site, article, blog post, etc. For word-of-mouth marketing, they’re excellent…

…if people use them.

The 1-2 Punch in Writing Effective Copy for the Web

Unedited Guest Article by Althea Marie Tan

Most online instructions on how to write effective copy for the Web revolve around details and tips regarding key words, page titles, META descriptions, and other similarly technical things. These materials will tell you, for instance, to mind your page title or soak up your copy with key words, all in an effort to jack up the chances of your site landing on the top results of search engines. These pointers, of course, are grounded on the assumption that people who go online to perform searches on engines hardly have any time to spare to click where the links go. They think that people are so pressed for time that they just look at the list of results and pick the links that appear to suit their inquiry best.

How to Ensure Your eBook Design Will Convert Customers Like Crazy!

The article’s a bit rough, but the info’s good. Obviously good cover design is critical. And for free ebooks usually distributed for “viral” purposes and/or to help stimulate sales, internal design and layout is critical as well. But for ebooks you sell? The customer won’t get to look “inside” until s/he’s already paid you. Ergo, the customer’s already converted (past tense). Yeah, academic, but if you’re flying solo, this realization may help you focus scarce resources appropriately to get your product out there quicker and cheaper. Besides, for digital infoproducts, who said you couldn’t tweak the internals as needed? That’s my tip for the day: Focus on the criticals, fulfill the basics adequately but work at getting the product out and selling fast, then tweak as you go along. — EES

7 Newsletter Writing Secrets That Will Retain More Clients

Another pretty good article to help you sell your newsletter writing and production services. Now, I don’t mean you should print out and show them the article — it’s only fair that if you do that, you include the author’s bio, which kind of defeats the purpose. Instead, use it to help you generate ideas for your own pitches and proposals to prospects. — EES

Unedited Guest Article by David Gruttadaurio

According to the Harvard Business Review, 91% of small businesses do absolutely nothing to retain their existing clients. That means only 9% of small business owners ‘get’ these facts:

  • The average American business loses 50% of its customer base every 5 years.
  • An existing customer spends an average of 67% more than new customers.
  • It costs 7 to 9 times more to acquire a new customer than it does to retain an old one.

Skype Call Recorder

I spent 15 minutes yesterday talking to an old friend in Darwin, Australia. Video too. Cost? $0. We were online, at our respective Net connections, and using Skype. Cel phone + Skype = land line killer. Seems that about the only reason why any business would need a land line nowadays is for faxes, and even that doesn’t seem to make much sense anymore either. If you haven’t checked out Skype yet, go do it (free, and I’m telling you, it’s really easy to figure out!).
