Writing greeting cards for profit is can be a great way to make money if you are the type of person who loves to write poetry.

We all love to give and receive cards at Christmas and on our birthdays, and from the humorous to the sublime, someone has to write the verses. This is the perfect opportunity for an aspiring poet to turn their skills into money.

Being able to write poetry is not all that is required by the greeting cards industry however, your verse must be able to convey the feelings of the sender to the recipient of the card. It is a skill that most writers attempt to achieve with anything they write, but it is more important in the card industry than anywhere else. With a greeting card you have only a few lines of prose to project the true meaning of its message.

Breaking into the greeting card market is no less difficult than any other form of writing, it consists of creating a portfolio of your work and being prepared to make numerous submissions and receive an equal number of rejections.

There are however several tricks you should be aware of when it comes to selling your work, according to the greeting card industry, if a card does not catch a buyers eye within the first 1-2 seconds they are not going to buy it. This is the first thing an editor is going to look at when choosing a writer. Realize too that there are many different companies that specialize in a particular variety of cards and make sure that your particular style fits in with theirs.

When you have your samples ready to submit, you will need to research each company that you plan on submitting work to carefully, each of them will have their own submission guidelines. Chances are good that if you do not follow them to the letter, your query will never reach the editor in charge of freelance entries. Most of the bigger card companies will have their guidelines on their websites specifically with freelance writers in mind.

Even though the greeting card industry is flourishing these days, the competition from other writers is not fierce. It takes a very special writer to be able to keep coming up with fresh ideas for verse on a daily basis. The money can be very good, some companies pay anywhere from $25 to over $100 per card verse. This field of writing is not for everybody, but those with the talent it can be a very good way to make a profit with their writing.

  2. Hallmark does them now. I haven’t tried this now fully rolled out service, but their marketvtest a couple or so years ago seemed to work pretty well except for a few very minor glitches. Curious that it took them a bit of time to get the whole thing launched officially

  3. I can attest to this personally! I have been selling greeting cards out of my home for years and I can’t believe the revenue stream that it has created. If you have a knack for this, you should definitely try and market your skills and products.
