Scribus – Free Desktop Publishing Software
In my head, this was all very recent, but on paper, it’s crystal clear that man, I’m getting old: It’s been 15 years since using desktop publishing (DTP) software was a big part of my daily routine. So it’s been about at least that long since I last thought about upgrading any of the DTP software licenses I owned.
Well, I just checked, and dang if I’m going to pay what they’re asking for for new copies of Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress, the current top DTP tools (after all this time, I think I can forget about any upgrade deals). So I went looking around for cheaper pro caliber alternatives.

Well, I think I found one, and it’s free. Open source. I’m not reviewing it — I most certainly am no longer qualified to see how well it compares to the current commercial state-of-the-art. Just bringing it to your attention, in case you need something with more DTP oomph than good old MS Word, but InDesign and Quark are just out of the question.
The software: Scribus. According to its site, it’s “an open-source program that brings award-winning professional page layout to Linux/Unix, MacOS X, OS/2 and Windows desktops with a combination of ‘press-ready’ output and new approaches to page layout.”
Sounds nifty. When I get around to actually trying it out, I’ll let you know what I think. Better yet, if you’re faimliar with it, comment below and tet the rest of us know what you think of it. — EES
